This photo is from a project called Aksarben. The word comes from spelling Nebraska backwards meant to represent "turning Nebraska around". Coined as a positive spin on development and growth in the heartland, I have always found it a nice play on ideas and expectations that may pop in your head when thinking of the midwest.
The project began with some long drives exploring Omaha and it's surrounding area. As the region has lost much of it's identity with the homogeneous nature of development that is sweeping the landscape, I wanted to explore the things that remain and hint to what had come before and still seems to find it's way to the surface.
6th and Canal St, Missouri Valley, IA was taken about 20 miles outside of the city and illustrates the stark contrast between the Omaha Metro and the surrounding rural communities.
